Researching keywords and keyword density

by on Mar.06, 2009, under Researching keywords

The first step in finding the best keywords is to make a list of the products, topics, and services that you offer. You can also make good use of your website logs to know which keywords have brought you the traffic in the past.

Be sure to select keywords that clearly define your business and products to drive traffic from the search engines. There are some websites which get high levels of traffic through general keywords although they might not end up getting sales.

General keywords are keywords that are very ambiguous and often times when people search using these keywords, they do not know what they are looking for.  More importantly, they are most likely not willing to make a purchase.  For example, the keyword “dogs” could pertain to dog breeds, dog food, dog collars, dog sickness, etc. And if your site is about dog shelters, by targeting the general keyword “dog” you would not only be wasting your money and time but you would unnecessarily be drawing irrelevant visitors who for example may not be interested in dog shelters but dog foods.
